Dr. J. Doug Stringer is founder and President of Turning Point Ministries International, which birthed an international movement known as Somebody Cares, a network of organizations impacting their communities through unified grassroots efforts. The collaborative network has grown rapidly and now impacts cities around the world. What began as an outreach to the streets of Houston, Texas in 1981 has become a clarion call for the Church to cross-racial and denominational lines to be a tangible expression of Christ in our communities.
As an Asian-American, Doug is considered a bridge-builder and ambassador of reconciliation amongst various ethnic and religious groups. Doug is an international conference and crusade speaker. Recognized as an apostolic leader with a prophetic voice, Doug's passion for God breaks his heart with a compassion for souls. From one-on-one ministry to crusades of thousands, Doug is a revivalist at heart.
Doug's heart burns with an evangelistic passion to see people reached with the Gospel. To the church, he presents a prophetic challenge of consecration, commitment, and action.
A licensed pastoral counselor and ordained minister, he holds a Ph. D. in leadership and human development. He is recognized for his contributions in both secular and sacred arenas, receiving Congressional recognition for the work of Somebody Cares in 2001 and the Barbara Jordan Leadership Award in 1995. Doug has served as a member of the Houston area Council on Gangs and is a Community Relations Consultant for Houston Police Department’s (HPD) Community Outreach Division. He also serves on HPD’s Youth Police Advisory Council. He is co-founder of Global Compassion Network (GCN), a network of worldwide compassion ministries and serves as a director or advisor on a variety of organizational boards, including: Asian Task Force, World Blessing Foundation, Sentinel Group with George Otis Jr., Mission Houston, Youth-Reach Houston, and The Governor of Texas’ One-Star Foundation.
Somebody Cares has pioneered several citywide strategies that have multiplied in cities across the nation from prayer initiatives such as Houston Prayer Mountain, Adopt-A-Gang, citywide prayer coverage known as Occupy the Land, and prayer coverage for judges called Justice at the Gate. Somebody Cares initiated a mentoring program for youth known as Youth Guidance Consultants, and developed an anti-gang and at-risk youth intervention handbook, which are now utilized by the Police Department. An annual back-to-school youth outreach called X-Day at the Bay and benevolent aid during Christmas known as Holiday of Hope have been integral parts of Somebody Cares’ efforts. In addition, Somebody Cares has been involved in awareness and training programs for potential adoptive parents known as Hope in Houston.
